On Sunday July 21st 2024, 49 Horticultural Society members ventured off on our annual summer bus trip.
The highlight of our trip was a visit to Dundurn Castle in Hamilton. The grand 40 room Italianate mansion, built in the 1830s, was home to Sir Allan Napier MacNab, premier of the Province of Canada. The home which represents the year 1855, surprisingly had such modern conveniences as gas lighting & running water. Our guided tour included the life of the servants, as well as the MacNab family. We were treated to Scotch shortbread baked in the kitchen.
Our tour continued outside in the 2 acre Kitchen Garden. Using tools & methods from the 1850's, the garden grows produce for the historic kitchen & the community. Over 200 heirloom varieties of vegetables, flowers, herbs & fruit are grown.
A delicious lunch was enjoyed at the Dutch Mill Country Market, outside Dundas.
Our private garden visits included the home of Tracey & Brad Paton just around the corner from Dutch Mill. Displays of peaceful gardens, natural stone work, colourful perennials, 30 varieties of hosta, ...and lemonade on the deck! Also the garden of Sheelah Dunn Dooley in Dundas. She believes in native plants & has a garden that sustains native insects, plants, butterflies and animals, where she can harvest native plant seeds.
Terra Garden Centre at Waterdown provided a chance for some plant shopping. Our bus trips often coincide with those wonderful 50% off specials!
Quehls in Tavistock is a 'perennial' favourite supper stop on our trips, and it certainly didn't disappoint. Just love that buffet!
