Judge's Comments - Jessica Carnochan, an Educational Opportunity!
Funky Forest Fungi
1st - Linda: Really nice composition, using the tree to draw our eye down to the fungi, as well as having some points of interest out of focus in the background.
2nd - Laurel: Filling the frame with the subject creates a pattern effect which is visually pleasing.
3rd - Carol: The use of the out of focus leaves in the foreground is a different take on composing the photo.
Rock On - A ROCK GARDEN
There were only three photos that were actually of rock gardens, the others were of rocks, in a garden, therefore didn't fit the category.
1st - Dianne: Great colour in the floral foreground with the rocks creating visual interest in the background.
2nd - Helen: Composed well with the layers of focal points, floral in the foreground, rocks in the middle with some height and colour in the background.
3rd - Cobe: Fits the category.
Merry Marigolds
1st - Dianne: The primary focus on the single bloom really captures the eye and holds it on the subject. Great colour and the angle of the photograph is great.
2nd - Carol: Beautiful colour and focus.
3rd - Pat: The eye is drawn to the largest bloom and follows down towards the foreground of the photo. Nicely done.
Blowing in the Wind
This is not an easy capture to make, so kudos to all those who entered.
1st - Carol: The softness of the plant shows through in the light and shadow of this photograph, very well composed, using the subject to create a feeling.
2nd - Linda: Great use of colour, again, you can feel the image moving in the wind, I like the placement of the subject.
3rd - Nick: While the image is out of focus, I think it really enhances the feeling of movement in the photo.
A few tips and tricks to remember - and if you're using your phone to try while photographing or editing...
-In composing a photo, remember the rule of thirds, divide your viewfinder, or screen into thirds, place the subject in either one third, or two thirds of the complete picture, it will create a more visually appealing outcome.
-Look at it from a different perspective, get down really low, and take the photo from under an object, or from up above, play around with where you are in relation to the subject.
-When taking a photo on your phone, in the crop section, utilize the straighten function, it will ensure that your photo is straight with the horizon!
